Now TWICE as Thick...

A question we regularly get about this product; Is this product the same thing as the roofing felt at Home Depot?

No, it is nothing like the roofing felt at Home Depot.

Felt 550™ is a product designed to protect the vapor barrier from punctures due to sharp rocks, concrete and metal in the crawl space. We highly recommend removing these items before encapsulating your crawl space, but that may not always be possible.

Here's an example-
Let's say someone in the past tried to fix a standing water problem in the crawl space. And, instead of doing it right they went to the local gravel pit and bought 10 yards of stone to put in the crawl space. The cheapest stone that day was crushed rock, which has very sharp edges. So with good intentions and terrible problem solving skills the crushed rock found its way into the crawl space (for the record that will not fix a standing water problem). So now the owner of the crawl space learns about SilverBack™vapor barrier and wants to fix it for good. Instead of hauling all of the stone out of the crawl space you can install the Felt 550™ onto the crushed rock and then install the vapor barrier to control the moisture.

So what else does the Felt 550™ do besides protect your investment in the SilverBack™ vapor barrier?

Crawl spaces are harsh environments and with that comes considerations in air quality. One of the most serious is Radon Gas, because it is a killer. The Felt 550™ plays an important roll in Radon Gas Mitigation. The Felt 550™ creates an air gap between the vapor barrier and the soil, enhancing the results of the active Radon fan(s). Allowing the fans(s) to keep a negative pressure on all parts of the crawl space floor and eliminating any "pockets" that seep the gas into the space.

The Felt 550™ also plays a key part in mitigating other soil gasses that cause odor. As we continue to do research on the best ways to fix the problems with air quality, energy loss and moisture levels we discover new problems and their solution. One of those new problems is soil gas odor(other than Radon Gas). This problem is not everywhere and it has nothing to do with our vapor barriers causing the smell (other plastics have been found to contribute depending on their makeup and additives). Like with Radon Gas the Felt 550™ enhances the results of the fan to mitigate the odor.

Rating Excellent Felt Underlayment
Water proof, durable, and VERY easy to manage under the crawl space. Made laying the 12 mil barrier much easier and will protect your investment.

Rating Extra Protection
Adds extra protection to the liner, and gives some cushion to the crawl space. Not quite as thick as I thought it would be, but still worth the cost.

Rating Consider it a must have for storage crawlspaces
This felt is similar to landscape fabric but a lot thicker. Laying the felt down after grading out your crawlspace provides a soft buffer between any sharp or jagged stones and your vapor barrier. Also laying the felt provided a semi clean start to the install so when rolling out the vapor barrier there was very little dirt or debris getting on the finished product. As a home owner self installing, I suggest that if your going to do the install, why not spend the little extra adding felt costs to do it right the first time!

Works great for protecting the vapor barrier. Doesn’t improve crawling comfort over loose stones.

I have the crawl space from hell to encapsulate. The ground is covered with this awful stone that digs through your knees. The Felt 550 was critical to my success. Why go through all that work of encapsulating and not take every effort to protect the vapor barrier from damage. I have 1800 feet of crawlspace floor and one third has a clearance of around 16 inches. Putting the felt down first made it less nasty when I had to belly crawl on the floor to put the 12 mil vapor barrier up on the uneven brick foundation.

I was pleasantly surprised how strong this is. I tried to tear it or poke holes in it, but I couldn't. I put it on top of rough edged stone, before I laid down the vapor barrier. It's much better than any of the alternatives I was considering. I'm very satisfied with it's performance.

Rating Awesome and 110% Impressed!
I usually don’t respond to reviews and stuff, but feel compelled to in this case. I was dealing with a damp crawl space for years and could not figure out what to do about it. It destroyed my floor by the rust from the nails staining through the linoleum. I found the CrawlSpace Solutions website and I can’t say enough great things about my experience with them as a company and the products I received... AWESOME and AMERICAN MADE. I had my order in 3 days as promised and what tough material this is!! Thank you very much, Larry, for all the instruction and advice. 110% impressed!

Once I understood what this was, I ordered and used 5 rolls. I covered my entire crawlspace floor with it prior to putting down the vapor barrier. It is strong and really is just what I was looking for.

We have recently used the Felt 5100 under our 20 MIL liner and I will have to say it's a must. We will be using this product under our crawlspace liners from here on out.

Rating Pretty good
1) GOOD: This is not like roofing felt , and shouldn't be. Felt has an organic fiber base which will decay if continuously wet, as underneath a vapor barrier. This synthetic product is just what is needed as a vapor barrier underlayment. 2) OK: I got this to protect my vapor barrier from sharp-edged gravel which was already covering my crawlspace floor. As such, this product is OK, but not as thick as I expected. It is like an extra-thick landscape fabric.

Rating FELT
The felt was and is a must for installing the vapor barrier. I am so glad I did my research and found it. I can see where the felt protects the plastic from sharp objects. It also helps to keep the dirt from getting all over the top of the plasitc during installation. Awesome product. Thanks Randy
